B13: Describing an Event

A minor exploration of powerlifting will be included in this fitness experiment essay. My first experience with powerlifting took place before this paper was assigned. I was already interested in trying out powerlifting but thought it would not be a thing I pursued. Primarily because my mom specifically said I was not allowed to do powerlifting (Shh…). I woke up, put on some sneakers and ran out the door because I did not want to be late. I got to War Memorial Gym a couple of minutes early, but had trouble finding the room. I also didn’t hear any loud music blaring through any of the halls I passed, which is how HT described how I would know I was heading in the right direction. I messaged HT and after a few minutes he replied with “I should’ve told you a lot of people are late lol”. By then, five to six people had arrived and said they were there for Lift so at least I knew I was in the right place. Then I made an observation, a minor exploration into powerlifting, about the people who had already arrived. All had experience with weightlifting and most of them were semi-experienced powerlifters. I noticed a trend, a lot of people were wearing or carrying Converse shoes. “I have Converse,” I thought and then I remembered HT’s videos where he wore Converse during a heavy squat lift and directly acknowledged his shoe wear. I initially thought it was a joke, but then I messaged him, “you should have told me to wear my converse though” to which he replied, “yea I probably should have told you that too.” I am explaining this experience because it was one of the first things I learned about powerlifting: the importance of proper shoe wear. Having no experience with lifting and being completely ignorant to how there is a lot of technique in lifting and ways to do things that are more correct and make the workout and motions easier. One of those things is being as low to the ground and level as possible - reducing even a centimeter of distance between your hands and the floor when you are in the starting position of a deadlift is important because every extra amount of height you have you must compensate by bending down lower which may decrease the stability of your form depending on your flexibility in that position. Also, you want to have to lift the weight as low as possible so if you are wearing thick running shoes, you have to lift the bar higher off the floor than if you are barefoot, which should always be avoided because it takes more work. In “The Big Three: Why Powerlifters Love Chuck Taylors,” Chris Randise emphasizes the importance of wearing thin, flat, rubber soled shoes for lifting and mentions the multiple benefits of wearing Converse. First, they are cheap. Second, because Converse shoes lack a heel cup, they allow you to “exert your energy straight into the ground,” which forces control and contraction of the muscles during a lift and “leads to better technique and better form over time” as well as the ability to lift more weight (Randise).
